Why do we develop bad habits? (added on 5 September 2025)
  • to form a habit
  • to develop a habit
  • I think we develop bad habits because bad habits:
  • feel good in the moment (for example, eating junk food gives us instant pleasure, even if it’s unhealthy in the long run)
  • are easier to form than good habits
  • come naturally, while good ones take effort
  • I think we develop bad habits because:
  • we don’t even realize we’re doing it, it just becomes automatic
  • we copy friends or family
  • social media and TV influence us
  • we only care about how we feel right now
  • we don’t think about long-term consequences
  • we want instant comfort
  • it’s hard to control ourselves all the time
  • everyone around is doing the same thing
  • We often form bad habits when:
  • we’re stressed or bored, because things like smoking, eating junk food, or scrolling on social media give us instant relief
  • we feel stressed or bored (we tend to choose the easiest option to feel better right away, which often turns into a bad habit)
  • we feel stress or boredom, and doing something unhealthy often feels like a quick way to escape those feelings
I think we develop bad habits mostly because bad habits feel good in the moment. For example, eating junk food or scrolling on our phone gives us instant comfort, even if it’s not good for us later. Another reason is because of stress or boredom, when we just need something to escape. I guess it’s also because they are easier than good habits, since watching TV is much simpler than going for a run. Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re doing it, it just becomes automatic. And of course, because we don’t think about long-term consequences, we only care about how we feel right now. Personally, I know I’ve done that many times with snacks or staying up late. So yeah, bad habits come naturally, while good ones take effort.
